Abstract
Gilthead seabream is one of most important species in aquaculture. Much progress has been made in different areas of knowledge, such as reproduction, nutrition, management, product quality, however genetic improvement is in its early stages. Breeding programs to improve daily growth and to reduce morphological deformities are being developed (PROGENSA). Today, many pathogens affect different population of fish, and more current concern is to improve disease resistance through breeding programs. Photobacterium damselae subspecies piscicida which has a greater impact on sea bass and gilthead seabream. This disease is first described in wild populations of white perch and striped bass, the natural hosts of the pathogen are currently a wide variety of marine fish. This pathogen provokes pasteurellosis, this being a bacterial sepsis caused by halophilic bacteria.
