Abstract
[SPA] En esta tesis se abordan las circunstancias que rodearon la construcción de un edificio del siglo XVIII: el Cuartel de Presidiarios y Esclavos de Cartagena. Su arquitectura y su historia, hasta ahora prácticamente desconocidas, hacen de esta pieza construida junto al mar, un sugerente objeto para la investigación. Son muchos los trabajos realizados sobre la arquitectura militar del s. XVIII, sin embargo en este estudio, se abre una nueva vía a la investigación al completar el conocimiento adquirido en libros y documentos consultados, con el conocimiento adquirido en la propia obra de rehabilitación del edificio, aprovechando la circunstancia de que el autor de la intervención arquitectónica es el propio doctorando. De esta forma han sido muchas las claves desveladas, no solo de su historia, sino también de su arquitectura. Se ha tratado de mantener una línea de investigación objetiva y rigurosa y ha sido numerosa la información incluida en la tesis, que ha permitido tomar o variar ... [ENG] This dissertation analyzes with the construction process of a 18th-century building: the Barracks for Prisoners and Slaves in Cartagena. Its architecture and history, almost completely neglected by researchers up to this moment, make this building placed by the sea a compelling subject for research. A fair number of studies about other military buildings in Cartagena have been published. However, the position of architect responsible for the refurbishment of the structure in order to house a School of Management and a Naval Museum, has allowed the author to carry on an innovative research methodology. Along with such written sources as books and archival documents, the dissertation leverages detailed knowledge of the building obtained by direct inspection during the renovation process, which has furnished valuable information about its history and its architecture.
