AB - [ESP]El uso de la cubierta plana en arquitectura como espacio habitable ha sido recurrente a lo largo de la historia. Un buen ejemplo son un gran número de tipos vernáculos que podemos encontrar en el Mediterráneo. Encontramos un punto de inflexión en el siglo XX de la mano de la tecnología, donde la cubierta plana tomó impulso. Su uso se ha planteado desde entonces tanto como un elemento envolvente como un espacio habitable, dando posibilidad a infinidad de posibilidades estéticasy funcionales. Haremos un recorrido a lo largo de la historia de la cubierta plana viendo cómo ha ido respondiendo a las necesidades de cada época, incluidas las actuales. Este recorrido nos permitirá observar que respuestas nos ofrece este sistema de cubierta para el caso concreto de viviendas plurifamiliares de manzana cerrada en ciudades densificadas. Estas respuestas se enmarcarán dentro de unos parámetros sociales, económicos y ambientales actuales, que nos permitirán abordar proyectos de nueva planta o reforma de existentes a partir de los mismos. Para ello se analizarán varios proyectos centrados en el desarrollo de las posibilidades funcionales de la cubierta plana, creando nuevos espacios habitables tanto para el edificio como para la ciudad contemporánea. [ENG]The use of the roof in architecture as a living space has been recurrent throughout history. A good example is a large number of vernacular types that we can find in the Mediterranean. We found a turningpoint in the 20th century thanks to technology, where the flat roof gained momentum. Its use has been considered since then both as an enveloping element and as a living space, giving the possibility to infinite aestheticand functionalpossibilities.We will take a tour through the history of the flat roof, seeing how it has responded to the needs of each era, including the current ones. This tour will allow us to observe what answers this roof system offers us for the specific case of multi-family closed-block dwellings in densified cities. These responses will be framed within current social, economic and environmental parameters, that will allow us to tackle new plant proyects or reform of existing ones based on them.For this, several projects focused on the development of the functional possibilities of the flat roof will be analyzed, creating new habitable spaces both for the building and for the contemporary city.
