AB - [ESP] En el artículo se examinan las posibilidades del adobe como material de construcción para edificaciones en altura a partir del estudio de las casas-torre de Yemen. Nos interesa analizar la idoneidad, fiabilidad y resistencia estructural del sistema constructivo utilizado, teniendo en cuenta las limitaciones del mismo. Además, consideramos los criterios compositivos para su adaptación a las exigencias del clima, la tradición y cultura local. [ENG] This article analyzes the advantages of using adobe as a suitable building material for constructing high-rise buildings. We consider the tower houses of Yemen as a study case. Our main purpose is to analyze the suitability, reliability and structural strength of the building system employed, considering the properties of the material itself and its limitations. Apart from this, factors like compositional criteria, the relation between this material and local tradition or how adobe shows a proper behavior under certain climatic conditions are also
considered.
