Abstract
The basic aim of the present work is the application of SEM in order to characterize the splat morphology in APS coatings. As result of this test, the relationship between the APS parameters and the resulting splats is established, which allows the optimization of the process.
The thermal spray is a manufacture process applied to complex pieces with a low price, being a valuable alternative to mould cast. The coating analysis starts with a review of available literature, which provides a basic scheme to develop the methodology to prepare the samples used in the electronic microscope. These samples must show isolated splats by using a suitable mask plate. Hereinafter these samples will be cut in an appropriate size for the microscope analyses. The splats will be look over from the top and in section. The process parameters used in these samples, drop velocity and temperature, will correlate with the splat morphology. This information could be used to optimize the coating.
