Resumen
[ENG] In the last decade, a new sharing concept has seen its birth, which is known today as
sharing economy. Its innovation is that creates a market formed by strangers who
exchange goods and services, giving in this way new opportunities to generate
transactions between peers.
One of the most significant examples of the sharing economy is Airbnb, a peer-to-peer
accommodation platform which was founded in 2008 and it has had since then an
exponential growth. Airbnb has become so successful that it has caused a rivalry with
the hotel industry and has had impacts on the rental market.
This paper analyzes in what ways the company has affected the hospitality industry
through the research that has been conducted and how hotel executives are responding
to the challenge. Finally, it evaluates the effect that Airbnb is having on the rental
market presenting the case of Barcelona.
