Resumen
[ENG] The present study focuses on the investigation of Opuntia ficus-indica as a source of plantbased biomass production for its use as a primary element in a biorefinery. A three-year study and monitoring of 39 Opuntia specimens located at the Tomás Ferro estate of the Polytechnical University of Cartagena were conducted. The research resulted in a yield of 36.068,83 kg/hectare using a planting spacing of 1.5x3. The cultivation management was studied to determine the most suitable approach from both agronomic and productive perspectives. The agronomic and technical management of the crop was also studied to optimize biomass production to the maximum extent possible. Additionally, the different market outlets for products derived from the crop were examined, along with their versatility in areas such as climate change, global warming, circular economy, and their role in the restoration of eroded and degraded ecosystems.
