Abstract
[ENG] Over the last decades, there have been significant water shortages especially in arid and semiarid regions. It happens in the Segura River Basin (south-eastern Spain) where an increasing demand of water has exerted heavy pressure on water resources, reaching a structural deficit of 460 hm3 affecting to 2.7 105 ha of irrigation land (CHS, 2007). Traditional furrow irrigation has been almost entirely replaced by drip irrigation systems in an effort to improve both water use efficiency and productivity in agriculture. Currently, drip irrigation takes up 204.000 ha in the SRB, or approximately 80% of the irrigated land. In this basin, the collective irrigation schemes, distribute water to farms generally by turns. There is an extended problem to fit the water supply and the crop water requirements. Accordingly, in order to deal with irregular water allotment and extended periods without water supply, many farms and collective irrigation schemes use Agricultural Water Reservoirs (AWRs). ...
