Resumen
[ENG] The south-eastern region of Spain is characterized by the production, marketing and export of citrus fruits to Europe. It is a continuously growing market that requires a turning point in agricultural production techniques, due to the significant environmental impacts caused by intensive citrus farming. The objective of this study is to evaluate and quantify the environmental footprint of organic and conventional grapefruit production systems (predominant in the area) irrigated with desalinated seawater (DSW). The methodology used to quantify the environmental impacts is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The processes analysed are irrigation, fertilisers, machinery and pesticides. The environmental impacts evaluated are: carbon footprint (HUC), freshwater ecotoxicity (EAD), freshwater eutrophication (ETF), terrestrial acidification (ACT), stratospheric ozone depletion (AOE) and ozone formation in terrestrial ecosystems (FOE).
