correspondiente a 0ºC.
[ENG] During the last years cultural changes have increased the demand of ready to eat food like fresh processed fruit and vegetables. Perspectives for Spanish market, particularly for the Murcia's Region are highly promising. Tomato and melon, two very important crops for Murcia's economy, are suitable for fresh processing. Controlled atmospheres (CA) as well as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and ozonized or calcium baths could be considered as useful tools to avoid both the loss of firmness and the microbial growth and increase their shelf life. Quality was described by using physical, chemical, microbiological and sensory parameters. ‘Amarillo’ melon and ‘Thomas’ tomato were selected as the best cultivar for the fresh processed. Wounding stress increased CO2 and C2H4 emission when compared to intact product. Quality of fresh processed tomato and melon was highly dependent on storage temperature. At 5°C metabolic activity was 1.5 to 2.4 times higher than at 0°C. At this temperature shelf life was up to 14 days. However, at 5°C even when CA and MAP were used, the products were marketable only until the tenth day of storage. For melon the use of CA (4 kPa O2 + 15 kPa CO2) produced a 2.1 times decrease in the respiration rate, ethylene emission and the loss of firmness. For tomato atmospheres of 4 kPa O2 and 5 kPa CO2 decreased 4.6 to 5 times de ethylene emission. Calcium baths at 60°C with chloride, propionate or lactate calcium highly reduced melon softness (which was only 8%). Microbial growth was also avoided by the use of calcium propionate. During the wound-induced stress ozonized baths slightly increased the CO2 and C2H4 emission. Baths (3 to 5 min) were effective to inhibit the microbial growth, however, that effect decreased as the storage time increased. Applied as a gas (4 ppm O3 during 30 min), cyclic expositions and O3 concentrations over the mentioned were more effective for reducing microbial growth during storage. Both, O 3 applied as a gas or a solution, prevented fructose and glucose depletion. Use of neither O3 neither produced visible injuries nor transfer any strange flavour to the product.

The vulnerability of Mediterranean arid and semiarid lands to human-induced changes in soil use means that the effects of climate change upon these environments will be exacerbated (Scharpen seel & Pfeiffer, 1998). Reduced precipitation or increased temperature accelerates l and degradation through the loss of plant cover, biomass turn over, nutrient cycling and soil organic carbon storage, accompanied by higher greenhouse emisions (Ojima et al.,1995). Moreover, if the projected increase in temperature following global climte change occurs, the degradative processes Will be aggravated (Kimble et al., 1998). Long term data series from natural rainfall events in semiarid environmnts are crucial for studying nutrient dynamics because: i) the soil's response within a few months of vegetation removal may not be sufficient for estimating its long-term behavior; and i i) it is difficult to produce data comparable to natural storms using rainfall simulators (Flanagan & Foster ,1989). The poster reports data obtained over a nine-year period (1988-1998) concerning changes in soil and sediment organic carbon and nitrogen contents in a non-disturbed vegetated area and an area from which vegetation had been removed and therefore exposed to human induced erosion processes.

In this contribution we propose a novel structure for the implementation of transmission zeros using the zero shifting property. In previous implementations, two open loop resonators operating at different resonances were employed. In the novel con_guration, one of the open loop resonators is substituted by a short-circuited transmission line, thus resulting into a more compact structure. Also, the new con_guration is able to support larger bandwidth than tranditional designs. This is due to an improved capability to increase the coupling between the input and output lines to the new short-circuited transmission line. For this purpose a new cross-shaped coupling structure is proposed. A manufactured prototype has been sucessfully tested. The results show the usefullness and validity of the new structure.

Alimentaria (366) 34-47, 2005.
http://hdl.handle.net/10317/309

The issue of collision avoidance in road vehicles has been investigated from many different points of view. An interesting approach for Road Vehicle Collision Assistance Support Systems (RVCASS) is
based on the creation of a scene of the vehicles involved in a potentially conflictive traffic situation. This paper proposes a neuro-fuzzy approach for dynamic classification of the vehicles roles in a scene. For that purpose, different maneuver state models for longitudinal movements of road vehicles have been defined, and a prototype has been equipped with INS (Inertial Navigation Systems) and GPS (Global Positioning System) sensors. Trials with real data show the suitability of the proposed neurofuzzy approach for solving support to the problem under consideration.

Reference architectures for specific domains can provide significant benefits in productivity and quality for real-time systems development. These systems require an exact characterization based on quantitative evaluation of architectural features refered to timing properties, such as performance, reliability, etc. In this work, an UML-based tool has been used to obtain a measure of performance between two alternative architectures. These architectures share the same functional components with different interaction patterns. The used technique is illustrated with an industrial and real case study in a well-known real-time domain: teleoperation systems. The obtained results show clear differences in performance between two architectures, giving a clear indication of which one is better from this point of view

Tele–operated service robots are used for extending human capabilities in hazardous and/or inaccessible environments. Their use is undergoing an exponential increase in our society, reason why it is of vital importance that their design, installation and operation follow the strictest possible process, so that the risk of accident could be minimised.
However, there is no such process or methodology that guides the full process from identification, evaluation, proposal of solutions and reuse of safety requirements, although a hard work is being done, specially by the standardisation committees. It’s also very difficult to even find in the literature examples of safety requirements identification and use.
This paper presents the engineering process we have followed to obtain the safety requirements in one of the robots of the EFTCoR1 project and the way this requirements have affected the architecture of the system, with a practical example: a crane robot for ship hull blasting.

Teleoperated robots are used to perform tasks that human operators cannot carry out because of the nature of the tasks themselves or the hostile nature of the working environment. Though many control architectures have been defined for developing these kinds of systems reusing common components, none has attained all its objectives because of the high variability of system behaviors.
This paper presents a new architectural approach that takes into account the latest advances in robotic architectures while adopting a component-oriented approach. This approach provides a common framework for developing robotized systems with very different behaviors and for integrating intelligent components. The architecture is currently being used, tested and improved in the development of a family of teleoperated robots which perform cleaning of ship-hull surfaces.

Currently, Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is considered one of the most promising approaches for software development. In this paper, a simple but complete example based on state-machines will be used to demonstrate the benefits of this approach. After defining a modelling language (meta-model) for state-machines, a graphical tool will be presented which is aimed at easing the description and validation of state-machine models. These models will then be used as inputs for another tool which will automatically generate the corresponding Ada code, including a simulation program to test the correctness and performance of the implemented application.

In this paper, a control system in the domain of teleoperated service robots is presented. A reference architecture - ACROSET - has been analyzed and designed following a concurrent object modeling and architectural design methodology (COMET) that uses UML as describing language. The architecture of the whole system has been implemented in a ship’s hull blasting robot - GOYA –using Ada 95 and GLADE. Our previous experience in developing teleoperated service robots using Ada is also presented

This paper describes the experience of the DSIE research group in the developing of the EFTCoR family of robots using an abstract architectural framework ACRoSeT, following the component-based paradigm. Using abstract components allow us to define very different architectures in a platform independent way. The translation of the abstract components to platform specific code is a hard and difficult task that can be partially automated with the help of the model transformation tools provided by the MDE approach.

células a algunas toxinas.

Nowadays, the market-place offers quite powerful and low cost reconfigurable hardware devices and a wide range of software tools which find application in the image processing field. However, most of the image processing application designs and their latter deployment on specific hardware devices is still carried out quite costly by hand. This paper presents a new approach to image processing application development, which tackles the historic question of how filling the gap existing between rapid throwaway software designs and final software/hardware implementations. A new graphical component-based tool has been implemented which allows to comprehensively develop this kind of applications, from functional and architectural prototyping stages to software/hardware co-simulation and final code generation. Building this tool has been possible thanks to the synergy that arises from the integration of several of the pre-existent software and hardware image processing libraries and tools.

This paper shows how the Xilinx System Generator can be used to develop hardware-based computer vision algorithms from a system level approach without the necessity of in-depth knowing neither a hardware description language nor the particulars of the hardware platform. Also, it is demonstrated that Simulink can be employed as a co-design and co-simulation platform
for rapid prototyping of Computer Vision HW/SW systems. To do this, a library of optimized image processing components based on XSG and Matlab has been developed and tested in hybrid schemes including HW and SW modules. As a part of the testing, results of the prototyping and co-simulation of a
HW/SW Computer Vision System for the automated inspection of tangerine segments are presented.

Automatic recognition of time and date stamps in CCTV video enables the inclusion of time-based queries in video indexing applications. Such ability needs to deal with problems of low character resolution, non-uniform background, multiplexed video format, and random access to the video file. In this paper, we address these problems and
propose a technique that solves the difficult task of character segmentation,
by means of a recognition-based process. Our method consists of three main steps: pattern matching, character location and syntactic
analysis. The experiments prove the reliability and efficiency of the proposed method, obtaining an overall recognition rate over 80%.

[ENG] The wide variety of today software systems has significantly increased the size and complexity of applications. This, together with the rapid technological advances in some fields such as electronics or communications, makes it necessary to develop software flexible enough to handle the continuous market changes in a time-effective manner. It is equally essential not to achieve this application flexibility improvement by reducing their efficiency or increasing their cost or time to market. During the last few decades new software development paradigms have arisen in response to these new demands. Among them, Object and Aspect Oriented, Component and Product Line Based Software Development paradigms, together with Generative and Visual Programming are some outstanding examples. However, these proposals have not found a significant acceptance among the community of mixed hardware/software (HW/SW) system developers. This can be partially attributed to the lack of agreement with respect to the methodologies and notations to be adopted as well as to the absence of tools which fully support the whole development life cycle of these applications. In fact, this type of systems are currently developed in a rather hardware-centric fashion while software is attributed a less important role. This approach usually leads to developing highly efficient systems which, on the other hand, are scarcely (if at all) flexible and reusable. This Thesis presents a novel software-centric approach to mixed HW/SW system development which is aimed at improving this kind of product flexibility and reusability while bearing in mind other requirements regarding efficiency, reliability, low cost, or short time to market. This new approach is built on the foundation of Software Product Lines while leveraging the capabilities offered by Component-Based Software Development and Generative Programming. In order to show the synergy arising from the integration of these three current Software Engineering hot topics, this Thesis present a practical study case on building Visual Information Processing Systems (VIPS), which can be easily extended to cover many other application domains, e.g. real-time control systems or networking applications. In order to support the multi-paradigm approach presented here, the IP-CoDER visual programming tool has been developed which covers the whole VIPS development life-cycle allowing the integration of several image processing libraries and tools currently available.

In order to integrate requirements into the current Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) approach, the traditional document-based requirements specification process should be
changed into a requirements modelling process. To achieve this we propose a requirements metamodel called REMM Requirements Engineering MetaModel) which
includes the elements that should appear in a requirements model (requirements,
stakeholders, test cases, etc.) together with the relationships that may appear between them. This metamodel is the basis of the REMM-Studio environment which enables: (1) to build graphical requirements models, (2) to validate them against the metamodel and against a set of additional OCL constraints, and (3) to automatically generate a navigable Software Requirements Specification (SRS) document as the main
deliverable of the Requirements Engineering process. REMM-Studio is expected to ease the integration of requirements with other development models (e.g. component models) and to facilitate the validation of the SRS thanks to its navigability.

This paper presents a simple and effective technique for the numerical calculation of the Green’s Functions in Cylindrical shaped enclosures. The technique is based on
the numerical imposition of the boundary conditions for the fields at the cylindrical walls, using the theory of images. The
practical value of the approach derived is in that the resulting Green’s functions can be used inside Integral Equation solvers
for the analysis of printed circuits and cavity backed antennas shielded by cylindrical enclosures. Numerical results for the Green’s functions inside a cylindrical cavity are presented, including convergence test of the algorithm. Results show that numerical convergence is attained fast, therefore demonstrating the usefulness of the developed algorithm.

An efficient numerical implementation of the Integral
Equation technique (IE) has been developed for the analysis
of the electrical characteristics of finite microstrip structures.
The technique formulates a volume version of the IE for the
finite dielectric objects. The numerical implementation combines
rooftop basis and testing functions for the conducting metallic
areas, and two different choices for the dielectric objects. The first
is based on a classical approach, combining pulse basis functions
and deltas for testing. The second is a novel full Galerkin
approach which employs rooftop functions defined on brick cells
inside the dielectrics. The input impedances of two microstrip
antennas have been computed with the new technique, showing
good agreement with respect measurements. Also the radiation
patterns of the antennas have been evaluated, showing again good
agreement with respect measurements. The practical value of the
approach is that microstrip circuits can be designed minimizing
the volume and size of the dielectric substrates. In addition, it is
possible to accurately predict the backward radiation of practical
microstrip radiators.

In this paper the design of novel planar narrowband microstrip filter is presented. The structure is designed and manufactured
in microstrip technology, and it is formed by set of pairs of resonators of different lengths. The length of one resonator in
each pair is adjusted so that a suitable odd resonance is tuned to the center frequency of the filter. The length of the other
resonator is adjusted so that the next even resonance is tuned again to the center frequency of the filter. The different path of the signal in each resonator produces a cancellation of energy at a given frequency, therefore implementing a transmission zero in
the insertion loss response of the filter. First, this paper presents a design example of a single set of resonators (basic unit cell) working at fifth and sixth resonances. Then, two basic unit cells working at the first and second resonances are first optimized, and then they are cascaded to show how higher order filter responses can be implemented. Measured results confirm the
theorical predictions, and validate the new structure for high selectivity applications.

The present work develops a method to design
shielded printed microwave filters based on Genetic Algorithms and Neural Networks. Genetic Algorithms techniques have been
applied in the microwave optimization problems, but they are usually very time consuming. Thanks to the Neural Networks,
the Genetic Algorithms operation time in the filter design task is reduced. The Neural Networks approximates the Green’s functions employed in the Integral Equation approach. This neural method allows fast analysis of any printed circuit inside the shielded structure. In order to improve the Genetic Algorithm performance a new specific fitness function suitable to microwave problems has also been developed. Results show the ability of the new method in the design of practical printed shielded microwave
filters.

Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) is recognized as a very promising approach to deal with software complexity. The Requirements Engineering community should be aware and take part of the Model-Driven revolution, enabling and promoting the integration of requirements into the MDSD life-cycle. As a first step to reach that goal, this paper proposes REMM, a Requirements Engineering MetaModel, which provides variability modeling mechanisms to enable requirements reuse. In addition, this paper also presents the REMM-Studio graphical requirements modeling tool, aimed at easing the definition of complex requirements models. This tool enables the specification of (1) catalogs of reusable requirements models (modeling for reuse facet of the tool), and (2) specific product requirements by reusing previously defined requirements models (modeling by reuse facet of the tool).

700 ppm.

The development of this article will centre on showing how the history of a geographical space comes marked by the natural resources that we find on it. If we relate the history of another place would be completely different, since it would be affected by other factors.
For the study of this article we are situated in a mining zone with more than 25 centuries of history placed in the south-east zone of Spain.
The Sierra Minera of Cartagena La Unión, at the south of the region of Murcia, occupies
approximately approximately 10 x 5 kilometres and has a rectangular surface lengthened in direction North-East – Southwest . In this space we find one of the major accumulations of lead and zinc of the Iberian Peninsula.
This mountainous set, which is considered part of the Bética mountain chain in its more oriental part, spreads parallel to the Mediterranean coast from the city of Cartagena up to Cabo de Palos and
separates the littoral of the interior plain in which finds the city of La Union.
The coastal zone is abrupt whereas the interior has softer mountains, coming up to the plain of the Cartagena's field.
In all this Sierra, which colors ocres and reddish made presage to the former civilizations of the existence of mineral
The ocres and redish colors along the sierra made presage to the former civilizations of the existence of a greats quantity minerals. In this space we find one of the major accumulations of lead and zinc of
the Iberian Peninsula.
The coastal situation of this territory, which was favoring the trade with other zones of the Mediterranean, the richness of its lands and fundamentally the mineral richness of its mounts, has motivated that different civilizations have fought to settle on this rich coast.
We find a landscape deeply modified, become infested with elements archeoindustrials, as mineral washersy, head frames, shafts, and landscape elements as surgencias, rafts and dumps, which betray to us the great quantity of changes that have realized the different cultures on him it.
The Sierra Minera of Cartagena - La Unión is in a zone deeply marked by the changes that suffered historically all the coasts of the Mediterranean Arch. From the Bronze Age we can find settlements in the zone that reflect the first works of mining industry.
After the first Phoenician and Greek populations, that used methods of extraction based on wells and galleries technologies, the mining splendour came with the Romans, since they developed a few
advanced technologies of exploitation that allowed creating a prosperous mining industry based basically on the lead and the silver. The great economic growth lived in the zone, thanks to the mines, brought the foundation of Carthago-nova, a prosperous Roman settlement with a great trade with other
points of the Mediterranean and an advanced urbanism for the epoch.
The present Cartagena, especially his old town, is seated on the ruins of buildings of Roman Period.
These buildings, are being found nowadays in the works of the new constructions that there is realized in the city, which is giving a great archaeological importance to the same one.
The intervention carried out by the Town council to safeguard this great patrimony consists of raising the ground floors and supporting the basements as museum spaces. One of the finds of major
importance, that is necessary to highlight, is the Roman Theatre found under the ruins of the city, and that is just now near to his opening to the public once restored by the architect Rafael Moneo.
After the Roman occupation, where the great majority of the mineral was extracted, there came near to the depletion of the mines with the means of extraction that existed till then, which led to the abandon
of the mines and to a great economic crisis from the 2nd century D.C. This situation was mixed with a few years of the history become infested with obscurantism, battles and diseases, the Middle Ages, which kept the zone in an economic lethargy of which would not wake up until centuries later.
After centuries of almost total absence of the mining activity, arises, from 1840, one most important mining and metallurgical development that allowed to place to the district of Cartagena-La Unión,
between the principal producers of lead, not only of Spain, but entire world. The Sierra of Cartagena, between 1860 and 1900, was producing as average 44 % of the production of lead of Spain, which in turn was appearing between the first world producers.

In this paper we provide a method to analytically compute the energy saving provided by the use of Transmission
Power Control (TPC) at the MAC layer in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). We consider a classical TPC mechanism: data packets are transmitted with the minimum required power to achieve a given packet error probability, whereas the additional MAC control packets are transmitted with the nominal (maximum)
power. This scheme has been chosen because it does not modify the network topology, since control packet transmission range does not change. This property also allow us to compute analytically the expected energy savings. Besides, this type of TPC
can be implemented in the current sensor hardware, and can be applied directly to several MAC protocols already proposed for
WSN. The foundation of our analysis is the evaluation of L ratio, defined as the total energy consumed by the network using the
original MAC protocol divided by the total energy consumed if the TPC mechanism is employed. In the L computation we
emphasize the basic properties of sensor networks. Namely, the savings are calculated for a network that is active a very long time, and where the number of sensors is supposed to be very large. The nodes position is assumed to be random -for the sake of example a normal bivariate distribution is
assumed in the paper- and no node mobility is considered. In the analysis we stress the radio propagation and the distribution
of the nodes in the network, that will ultimately determine the performance of the TPC. Under these conditions we compute
the mean value of L. Finally, we have applied the method to evaluate the benefits of TPC for TDMA and CSMA with two representative protocols, L-MAC and S-MAC using their
implementation reference parameters. The conclusion is that, while S-MAC does not achieve a significant improvement, LMAC
may reach energy savings up to 10-20%.

Wireless Sensor Network(WSN)are designed for data gathering and processing, with particular requirements and constraints: low hardware complexity, low energy consumption, special trafic pattern suport, scalabity, and in some case, real time operation. In this paper we present the Virtual TDMA foe Sensor (VTS) MAC protocol, which intends to support the previous features, focusing particularly on real-time operation. VTS adaptively creates a TDMA arrangement with a number timeslots equal to the actual number of nodes in range. Thus, VTS archives and optimal throughput performance compared to TDMA protocols with fixed size of frame. The TDMA frame is set up and maintained by a distributed procedure, which allows sensor to asynchronously join and leave the frame. A mayor advantage of VTS is that it guarantees a bounded latency, which allows soft real-time applications. An expression for the upper latency bound is also provided in this paper.VTS performance is evaluated by simulation. Results show less power consumption than other proposals in the field. We also introduce a novel multi-hop operation by cordinated sleep/awake cycles among clusters.

Present basis of knowledge management is the
efficient share of information. The challenges that modern industrial processes have to face are multimedia information
gathering and system integration, through large investments and adopting new technologies. Driven by a notable commercial interest, wireless networks like GSM or IEEE
802.11 are now the focus of industrial attention, because they provide numerous benefits, such as low cost, fast deployment
and the ability to develop new applications. However, wireless nets must satisfy industrial requisites: Scalability,
flexibility, high availability, immunity to interference, security and many others that are crucial in hazardous and
noisy environments. This paper presents a thorough survey of all this requirements, reviews the existing wireless solutions,
and explores possible matching between industry and the current existing wireless standards.

In this paper we propose the use of non-persistent CSMA as an anti-collision procedure for RFID active tags. Current proposals for both passive and active tags are based on the framed slotted ALOHA protocol, which does not scale well requiring additional procedures for frame length adaptation. However, active RFID devices already include carrier sense capabilities with no additional cost and, thus, CSMA may be employed seamlessly. Nevertheless, selecting the contention
micro-slots of CSMA in the classical way (i.e., with a uniform distribution and an
exponential back-off algorithm) does not result in an efficient identification process, as we will demonstrate. Fortunately, better choices can be found. Recently, an optimal distribution for the selection of micro-slots for event-driven sensor networks has been computed, as well as a practical implementation: the Sift distribution. In this work we propose the application of the quasi-optimal Sift distribution along with
CSMA for active tag identification. By means of an analytical study, we evaluate
the average time needed for identification with this mechanism and compare it with
the current ISO 18000-7 and EPC “Gen 2” standard. The results reveal that the
Sift-based non-persistent CSMA outperforms both of them. Moreover, it also scales
much better, without the need for further adaptation mechanisms

The formidable growth of WSN research has opened challenging issues about their performance evaluation. Despite the steady increase in mathematical analysis and experimental deployments, most of the community has chosen simulation for
their study. Although it seems straightforward, this approach
becomes a quite delicate matter. Complexity is caused by several issues. First, the large number of nodes heavily impacts
simulation performance and scalability. Second, credible results demand an accurate characterization of the sensor radio channel.
New aspects, inherent in WSN, must be included in simulators, e.g. a physical environment and an energy model, leading to
different degrees of accuracy versus performance. Moreover, many necessary models are in the continuous-time domain (e.g.
heat transmission, battery discharge), being complex to integrate into discrete event network simulators. These issues result in
an exponential growth of the overall network state information.
Through this survey we review these problems both quantitatively and qualitatively while depicting a common suitable simulation
model. We also briefly describe the most significant simulation frameworks available.

User requirements for the performance of GlobaL Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based road applications have
been significantly increasing in recent years. Safety systems based on vehicle localization, electronic fee-collection systems, and traveler information services are just a few examples of interesting
applications requiring onboard equipment (OBE) capable of offering a high available accurate position, even in unfriendly
environments with low satellite visibility such as built-up areas or tunnels and at low cost. In addition to that, users and service
providers demand from the OBEs not only accurate continuous positioning but integrity information of the reliability of this position as well. Specifically, in life-critical applications,
high-integrity monitored positioning is absolutely required. This paper presents a solution based on the fusion of GNSS and inertial sensors (a Global Positioning System/Satellite-Based Augmentation
System/Inertial Navigation System integrated system) running an extended Kalman filter combined with an interactive multimodel method (IMM-EKF). The solution developed in this paper supplies continuous positioning in marketable conditions and a meaningful trust level of the given solution. A set of tests
performed in controlled and real scenarios proves the suitability of the proposed IMM-EKF implementation as compared with lowcost GNSS-based solutions, dead reckoning systems, single-model EKF, and other filtering approaches of the current literature.

The issue of collision avoidance in road vehicles has been investigated
from many different points of view. An interesting approach
for Road Vehicle Collision Assistance Support Systems (RVCASS) is
based on the creation of a scene of the vehicles involved in a potentially
conflictive traffic situation. This paper proposes a neuro-fuzzy approach
for dynamic classification of the vehicles roles in a scene. For that
purpose, different maneuver state models for longitudinal movements of
road vehicles have been defined, and a prototype has been equipped with
INS (Inertial Navigation Systems) and GPS (Global Positioning System)
sensors. Trials with real data show the suitability of the proposed neurofuzzy
approach for solving support to the problem under consideration.

The importance of benchmarking in the achievement of better results in the purchasing function and in overall business performance has been asserted in several textbooks, and in the practitioner and academic literature. However few studies have addressed the implementation of benchmarking in purchasing and its impact on purchasing and business performance. Data was collected from 306 companies and structural equations modeling is used to develop valid and reliable instruments for benchmarking, purchasing performance and business performance. The results show a significant positive impact of benchmarking on purchasing performance and an indirect positive effect on business performance. Implications of the findings for purchasing management are discussed.

This paper examines two research questions. Firstly, is a re-engineered company a suitable platform for the subsequent application of TQM principles? Secondly, is BPR an appropriate means to transform an organisation operating along traditional lines into one which is managed using TQM principles? It is argued that these questions have been given scant attention by the academic fraternity. The analysis presented in the paper indicates that the application of BPR can provide the base for the subsequent development of TQM.

Quality Costs have been discussed widely in the literature. This discussion has not always agreed and it is possible to identify two basic schools of thought; one asserts the existence of a minimal level of quality cost for a given level of prevention and appraisal activities, and the other asserts that through prevention quality improvement is constant. This paper summarises these positions and outlines a behaviour model of quality costs that unifies and clarifies them. The behaviour model is based on the consideration of the cumulative effects of prevention. Ceteris paribus, continuous prevention activities should permit quality improvements whilst at the same time reducing the costs necessary to obtain them. The behaviour model introduces the effect of external quality requirements in an attempt to explain how, over time, quality improvement efforts do not necessarily result in decreased quality costs as customer's quality requirements rise over the same period.

Information Technology (IT) and Total Quality Management (TQM) have significantly impacted on most organizations and each has been widely researched. However, there is little well-founded empirical research on the relationship between the two, particularly on the way in which TQM is influenced by IT. This paper presents an investigation of such relationships through a survey of the largest industrial companies based in Spain. The data indicate that the most intensive users of IT perceive a bigger impact on their TQM dimensions.

Many studies claim that implementing standardization of materials and purchasing procedures (standardization in purchasing) can help organizations to improve both purchasing and business performance. The objective of this research was to examine a structural model in which standardization in purchasing has a direct impact on purchasing performance and an indirect impact on business performance mediated through purchasing performance. The results of the research provide support for the relationships hypothesized.

However, there is little well-founded empirical research on the relationship between the two, particularly on the way in which TQM is influenced by IT. This paper presents an initial investigation of such relationships through an interview survey of fourteen companies based in Spain. The paper concludes with a proposal for this framework and an instrument for testing the conjectured linkages within the framework.

After analysing a sample of 442 of the biggest Spanish manufacturing companies, some evidence about the influence of Total Quality Management (TQM) on the companies’ operating performance has been obtained. However, companies applying TQM together with the ISO 9000 standards did not show positive results. This fact leads us to believe that, despite the beliefs of ISO 9000 as a good first step in the way of implementing TQM, once implemented some ISO 9000 principles are in contradiction with TQM philosophy. These non-congruent systems applied together would cause the company to obtain fewer benefits than only one of them. The study concludes that when ISO 9000 and TQM are applied simultaneously, the resultant benefits to the company are no better than those experienced if either system were applied in isolation.

To provide insights into current IT and TQM theory and practice on operational and quality performance, in particular the use of IT in supporting TQM policies and practices.
Hypotheses derived from the key features of TQM and IT presented by previous authors are tested using Structural Equation Modelling through field research on a sample of 234 manufacturing companies in Spain.
The results indicate that the sampled firms make considerable use of IT to support their TQM initiatives and that overall such efforts generate significant positive gains on operational and quality performance, the few exceptions to this are noted and discussed.
The limitations of the survey include: single key informant, only cross-sectional and limited performance measures. A longitudinal/cross-cultural study including other performance measures (e.g. percentage defect rates, number of customer claims) would add to further understanding.
A survey of IT in support of TQM initiatives on operational and quality performance in manufacturing suggests how firms and other organisations should focus their IT investments to improve performance.
Both Information Technology and Total Quality Management have had, and continue to have, a significant impact on most organizations. Although each paradigm has been widely researched there is little empirical research on the relationship between the two and how they both relate to business performance.

Supply chain management (SCM) and total quality management (TQM) can help provide organizations with a sustainable competitive advantage by improving product quality and service while reducing cost. An effective purchasing function is one of the essential competencies to supply chain success and quality management. The objective of this research was to empirically examine a mediational model in which quality management purchasing has a direct impact on purchasing’s internal customer satisfaction and an indirect impact mediated through purchasing’s operational performance. All measurement scales satisfy key measurement criteria including unidimensionality, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and reliability. Our study showed that quality management purchasing is significantly related to purchasing’s operational performance and internal customer satisfaction.

Total Quality Management (TQM) is perhaps the leading management approach that companies employ to improve their product and service quality with the aim of improving typical measures of business performance (e.g. increased profits, increased market share, reduced costs). However, consumer perception of quality not only results from an evaluation of the intrinsic quality attributes of the product (e.g. performance, reliability, durability) but is also affected by the marketing mix (e.g. price, advertising, warranties) adopted by the company selling the product.
This paper offers a first attempt at cross-functional fertilization by examining the relationships between TQM, some marketing mix variables and measures of company performance by exploring the diverse multi-disciplinary literature and developing an explanatory framework, which is tested using non-parametric correlation and refined through an empirical study of Spanish manufacturing companies.
The results show that the most important TQM dimensions are the system of employee relations and the use of quality management-related design tools. The results also indicate the existence of a relationship amongst price, advertising and warranties, but that these marketing variables were not related with TQM and that further research is required to include a wider definition of marketing strategy.

After more than two decades since quality became part of managers’ everyday lexicon, total quality management (TQM) and ISO 9000 have taken the centre stage. However, there has been much debate about how they might be related to each other. This research is a new contribution to the knowledge on the relationships between TQM and ISO 9000, and it addresses their implications on performance and motivations for implementation. While past studies have considered them separately, we study them together in one study. As might be expected, both TQM and ISO 9000 lead to improvement in performance. However, it appears internal motivation to implement ISO 9000 is associated with high performance, whereas external motivation is not. Further, companies with high internal motivation for ISO 9000 naturally show a high level of TQM practices. We use institutional theory and resource based view to consider the internal versus external motivations for implementing ISO 9000. The data for this research has been obtained from a large sample of Spanish industrial companies. Longitudinal objective data have also been used.

One of the key elements of a TQM policy is the assurance of an adequate supply of materials and components. The objective of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it analyses the relationship between different purchasing system variables and supplier quality assurance practices. Secondly, it explores both the connection between supplier quality assurance practices and other quality assurance practices used for internal processes and examines the relationship of such practices with supply operational results. Different hypotheses are tested using data obtained from a sample of 152 Spanish automotive components suppliers. This data shows clear evidence of the importance of product, supplier and company characteristics and highlights the importance of a company-wide commitment to the application of quality assurance principles.

This paper examines the relationship between Information Technologies (IT) and Total Quality Management. The examination is made against a number of dimensions of TQM including customer and supplier relationships, workforce management, process flow management and quality data and reporting. The point is made that the impact of IT on the TQM intervention depends on the type of IT application in terms of its use as an agent to the work process or as an enabling mechanism. The impact of IT on process design and control and what quality professionals need to do to assure quality is also discussed and suggestions made.

The focus of this paper is to trace the origins of the term TQM and clarify the different definitions employed by academics and practitioners. Feigenbaum and Ishikawa are perhaps the greatest contributors to the development of the term. The other recognised quality management gurus such as Crosby, Deming and Juran have shaped the dimensions, practices and mechanism which underpin the concept, but it is noted that neither of these three actually use the TQM term. TQM started to be used in the mid 1980’s and only become a recognised part of the quality-related language in the late 1980’s. Business innovation, that is, the adaptation of management systems to the changing conditions of the environment, is a key factor for organisations if they wish to survive and grow. Total Quality Management (TQM) has demonstrated its potential to be a successful way for organisations to eliminate costs, improve productivity and gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. However, are TQM and business innovation compatible? The advantages and disadvantages of TQM as a means of developing and facilitating business innovations are discussed in this paper. It is argued that TQM does not hinder business innovation and some of its dimensions can assist an organisation to be more innovative. The compatibility of reengineering, which is a form of business innovation, is also analysed in the paper, along with the effects of TQM on the successful implementation of information technologies.

In this paper, we consider the problem of motion of a symmetrical gyrostat with
a fixed point in a Newtonian force field, where the potential function adopts the
form U = U(K3), the gyrostatic momentum and the position vector of the center
of mass are on the axis of symmetry. First, we obtain the equilibrium positions
of this problem; then, by means of the Energy-Casimir method, we give sufficient
conditions of stability for some of these equilibria and, by spectral methods, we
obtain necessary conditions of stability.
The obtained results generalize the previous
papers [7], [8],[9], [1] and [2].

We consider the non-canonical Hamiltonian dynamics of a gyrostat in the nbody
problem. Using the symmetries of the system we carry out a reduction process in two steps, giving explicitly at each step the Poisson structure of the reduced system. Next,we obtain general properties of the relative equilibria of the problem and if we restrict to different approximations of the gravitational potential function, some particular cases are studied and, by means of energy-Casimir and spectral methods, sufficient and necessary conditions of stability can be obtained. We extend some results by Fanny and Badaoui (1998) and by Mondéjar, Vigueras and Ferrer (2001). In the case of a rigid body in the three-body problem, in terms of the global variables in the unreduced problem, was considered, and in the case of a gyrostat in the three-body problem was studied, but working now in the reduced system; in this way natural simplifications in the conditions
of the equilibria appear. As a particular case, the problem of three bodies is considered for an arbitrary approximation of the potential function and the conditions for existence of Eulerian and Lagrangian equilibria are given in different cases. Here, we use geometric methods, developed in part by Marsden, and others.

We consider the noncanonical Hamiltonian dynamics of a gyrostat in the three-body
problem. By means of geometric-mechanics methods we study the approximate Poisson
dynamics that arises when we develop the potential in series of Legendre and truncate
this in an arbitrary order k. Working in the reduced problem, the existence and number
of equilibria, that we denominate of Euler type in analogy with classic results on the topic, are considered. Necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence in an approximate dynamics of order k are obtained and we give explicit expressions of these equilibria, useful for the later study of the stability of the same ones. A complete study of the number of Eulerian equilibria is made in approximate dynamics of orders zero and one. We obtain the main result of this work, the number of Eulerian equilibria in an approximate dynamics of order k for k ≥ 1 is independent of the order of truncation of the potential if the gyrostat S0 is close to the sphere. The instability of Eulerian equilibria is proven for any approximate dynamics if the gyrostat is close to the sphere. In this way, we generalize
the classical results on equilibria of the three-body problem and many of those obtained
by other authors using more classic techniques for the case of rigid bodies.

Recent progress in mechatronics, perception and computing is opening up a number of new
application domains for robotics, improving the way in which robots perform actions that
release the human from dangerous or risky tasks. Nowadays, the field of service robotics is in continuous development, covering more and more application domains, from home to industry, and offering more and more capabilities in a reliable and user-friendly way. One of the new environments where robots are starting to appear is in the shipyard. Developing
robots for working in shipyards is very challenging because of both the difficulty of the missions that robots should perform as well as the lack of robotic culture in this kind of industrial facility.
The authors’ research group, the DSIE (Division of Electronics Engineering & Systems) at the
Technical University of Cartagena, has a considerable experience in the development of
software applications for teleoperated service robots, mainly for nuclear power plants (Iborra et al., 2003) and in shipyards industry (Fernández et al., 2004). The work presented in this chapter has been carried out in the context of the EFTCoR project (Environmental Friendly and Cost-Effective Technology for Coating Removal) (EFTCoR, 2005). The EFTCoR project sought to develop a solution for ships’ hulls cleaning and for the retrieval and confinement of the oxide, paint and sea adherences resulting from the cleaning operations.
For this purpose, several robots were designed, one of which being a climbing vehicle capable of positioning a grit-blasting tool onto ships’ hulls. This chapter describes our experience in the development of the climbing robot and the software architecture designed
for its control unit, ACROSET (Control Architecture for Service Teleoperated Robots).
Software architecture is one of the key elements of any robotic system. As technology
evolves, it is possible to build systems that are capable of carrying out more complex tasks in more complex environments. But the new robot capabilities demand a great variety of components, both hardware and software, that must interact in diverse ways. Such
components must be structured in a way that (1) the robot achieves its global functionality and (2) the system could be easily maintained and updated. The way in which components are organised is described by the architecture of the system. The importance of considering
system architecture to handle the inherent complexity of robotic systems is well known
(Coste-Manière & Simmons, 2000): overall system complexity can be reduced by dividing itinto smaller components with well defined abstraction levels and interfaces. The definition of a good architectural framework allows rapid development of systems, maintenance, scalability and reuse of a large variety of components, with concomitant savings in time and money.
As said before, the objectives of this chapter are twofold: to present the climbing vehicle (Lázaro) and the architectural framework used for designing its control unit (ACROSET).
This chapter is structured in eight sections. Section two exposes the challenges and special requirements imposed by shipyards to design robots for cleaning ships’ hulls. It also includes discussion on the state of the art on climbing robots for ship cleaning and the issues that, in our opinion, can be improved. Our contribution, the Lázaro robot, is described in section three, where two versions of this climbing vehicle are presented. In section four, the
importance of software architecture for the development and maintenance of a robot is
discussed, including a brief description of the latest frameworks for robotics and the
possible contribution of ACROSET to the state of the art. The main characteristics,
subsystems, components and design guidelines of ACROSET are presented in section five.
The following section explains how this architectural framework has been used to develop the control unit of the climbing robots, and towards the end the chapter, some tests, results, lessons learned and conclusions are presented.

Present grit blasting technology for hull cleaning is very pollutant, environmentally unaffordable, and it is progressively forbidden in the most environmental countries
(mainly north of Europe). At the time being, the above methodology has been partially substituted by ultra highpressure
water blasting, however they do not show as good performance as the grit blasting systems. This paper describes a service robot for hull blasting. The technology
we developed consists of the cleaning head, the robot body, the remote control unit and the teleoperation platform. This
solution allows a reliable and cost effective operation regarding hull grit blasting, obtaining a high quality surface
preparation (SA 2 ½) together with a dramatic reduction of waste and zero emissions to environment. A prototype of the
robot has been developed and tested in IZAR shipyards. We presents the functional requirements, system concept and
architecture of this robot. This work was supported by the Spanish government, the European Union (CICYT-FEDER)

Teleoperated robots are used to perform hazardous tasks that human operators
cannot carry out. The purpose of this paper is to present a new architecture (ACROSET)
for the development of these systems that takes into account the current advances in
robotic architectures while adopting the component-oriented approach. ACROSET
provides a common framework for developing this kind of robotized systems and for
integrating intelligent components. The architecture is currently being used, tested and improved in the development of a family of robots, teleoperated cranes and vehicles
which perform environmentally friendly cleaning of ship-hull surfaces (the EFTCoR
project). This paper summarises the features of this project and describes the
implementation of ACROSET on a hardware platform based on a PLC (Programmed
Logic Controller) SIEMENS SIMATIC S7-300 and the Field-Bus PROFIBUS DP.

This paper presents a join experience in modelling the requirements of the product
line of teleoperated systems for ship hull maintenance, which are basically robotic systems used for ship maintenance operations, such as cleaning or painting the ship hull. It is proposed to specify the product line requirements through a feature model, a conceptual model, and a use case model, which together allow domain understanding, derivation of reusable product line
requirements, and efficient decision-making in the specification of new systems developed in the product line. Action Research, a qualitative research method in software engineering, has been applied to define the collaborative research process.

The teleoperated robots are used for performing works that human
operators can not carry out due to the very nature of their tasks or the hostile
nature of the working environment. Though many control architectures have
been defined for developing such kind of systems and reuse common components, none of them have reached all its objectives due to the great variability among systems behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to present a new architectural approach for the development of these systems that takes into
account the current advances in robotic architectures as well as the componentoriented approach. The described architectural approach provides a common
framework for developing robotized systems with very different behaviors and
for integrating intelligent components. The architecture is currently being used,
tested and improved in the development of a family of robots, teleoperated
cranes and vehicles, which perform an environmentally friendly cleaning of
hull-ship surfaces (the EFTCoR project). This paper summarises the methodological approach taken, the features of the systems that constitute its design drivers and finally the main characteristics of the proposed architecture.

“Environmental Friendly and cost-effective Technology for Coating Removal”
(EFTCoR).

http://hdl.handle.net/10317/470
[ENG]The development of European foreign trade requires the modernisation of the transeuropean transport networks, specially those related to the maritime transport, that accounts for the majority of the goods traffic in terms of volume, inside the European market. However, the diversity that characterise European ports ownership and management makes a very hard task for the Common Transport Policy (CTP) to define a set of rules that could inform the financial aspects of the ports activity.
This research summarise the principles developed by the European Commission, through the CTP, following this objective, containing a detailed description of its rationale.

[ENG]Spanish foreign trade has growth at a significant rate since the beginning of the process of openness and internationalisation of the Spanish economy in the 1960s. In this context, foreign maritime trade accounts for the 85% of the total Spanish trade in terms of volume.
In this research we study the structure and evolution of the Spanish ports in the recent years. The analysis includes the identification of the geographical and sectoral patterns of the maritime goods traffic developed through the Spanish ports as well as a more detailed study of the main traffics of every individual port.
Finally, this research presents an overview of the role that the main Spanish ports play in the most dynamic segment of maritime goods traffic at the present times, the container cargo, for the European Union context.

[ENG]Economic development strategies present an evolution in Latin American countries throughout the XXth century. Economic policies characterizing every individual period have derived from the ideological corpus leading every era, but what is more important for the analysis presented here, the collapse of every model of development has been due to the sharp changes occurred in the international economic environment. This is the hypothesis launched in this article that summarizes, through this scope, the last hundred years of Latin America economic history.

[ENG]The implementation of the European Single Market offers significant opportunities to the development of trade relationships among the member states. Taking profit of this opportunities requires to develop a real transeuropean transport corridors among the EU geography and specially to promote the development of a modern transport sector.
The relevance of the maritime goods transport is of major importance to pursue this goal, due to its significant role in the goods transport inside the Single Market. With this objective, we focus this research in exploring the reality, potential and possibilities related to two relevant parts of the maritime intraeuropean transport sector, the Short-Sea Shipping sector and the Combined Transport sector.

http://hdl.handle.net/10317/473
[ENG]Mercosur has emerged in the last decade of the XXth century as one of the most dynamic experiences of regionalism worldwide. This paper contains a survey on the most salient features regarding the effects of this experience of regional economic integration.
The analysis starts with the welfare effects of Mercosur from both a theoretical and an empirical approach. It is completed with an overview of the most important characteristics of the formation of Mercosur as a political economy, interest groups, process. This approach includes the recent contributions of the endogenous tariff formation literature applied to the Mercosur experience.

[ENG]The final decade of the past century is characterised by the emergence of a considerable number of regional economic integration experiences. In this context of increasing regionalism, Latin America accumulates a significant volume of experiences, being the Common Market of the South Cone (Mercosur) one of the most dynamic ones.
This research analyses the integration processes that the Southern Cone of America countries are dealing with. The paper starts with a brief reference to the FTASA (Free Trade Agreement of South America) and FTAA (Free Trade Agreement for the Americas) processes.
Following this, the paper develops a more extensive analysis of the Mercosur experience, including its formation years and the extension of the scope of this agreement in most recent years.

We study the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) model of trade empirically using regional
data rather than country data. Our findings for the Spanish regions suggest that the HOV
model performs remarkably well after relaxing the “strict” assumptions of world factor
price equalisation and world identical and homothetic preferences. We also test whether
Spanish regions share the same production techniques. Allowing for productivityadjusted
factor price equalisation across regions or regional-specific input-output
matrices contributes very little to improve the predictive capacity of the HOV model,
suggesting that the state of technology and choice of techniques is quite similar across
Spanish regions.

We study the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek (HOV) model of trade empirically using regional data rather than country data. Unlike Davis et al. (1997) that find that the HOV model performs remarkably well using Japanese regional data, our findings for the Spanish regions suggest that the HOV model performs poorly after relaxing the “strict” assumptions of world factor price equalisation, world identical and homothetic preferences and Hicks-neutral technological differences across regions. The limited explanatory capacity of the endowment-driven models complements the findings of economic geography models that predict well the regional pattern of production and trade specialization of Spanish regions.

[ESP] Se almacenaron granadas (Punica granatum, cv.

After storage and shelf life, weight losses, decay, chilling injuries, texture, external and internal color, and organoleptical properties of arils were evaluated. After 11 weeks of storage, weight losses, chilling injuries and decay were reduced with CA treatments. This effect was increased when combined with UV-C treatments. After shelf life, the highest weight losses and chilling injuries were found in air treatments without UV-C . For both evaluating periods no changes

[ENG] Minimally fresh processed melon (MFP) is a product highly demanded by consumers. Minimal processing involves cutting, washing, disinfection, and packaging, all of which can damage the product, reducing the quality and shelf life. Factors like cultivar, ripening stage and kind of cut can influence these factors. Nowadays, it is possible to find different melon cv. of short (conventional), medium and long life, but their behavior and suitability for MFP is still unknown. This work evaluated the influence of the cv. and kind of cut in the quality of MFP melon. Three cv. of ‘Galia’ melon were chosen, conventional (‘Galápago’), médium (‘Solarking’) and long life (‘Cyro’). These cv. were cut into longitudinal slices, trapezoidal sections and cylinders and packaged under modified atmosphere at 5ºC up to 10 days. At 0, 3, 7 and 10 days, the respiration rate, ethylene production, firmness and sensory quality were monitored. Cyro kept a higher firmness during storage with values of 7.6 N at 10 days, followed by Solarking and Galápago with 5.4 and 5.8 N respectively. The kind of cut influenced the firmness change, with slices remaining firmer than cylinders. A higher respiration rate was found when melon was cut in cylinders. All cv. showed similar ethylene production rates. No differences among cv. and kind of cut for external appearance were detected by the sensorial panel. Cyro had a poor taste after 10 days. Galapagos had a rich and delicate taste which panelists scored upper the limit of marketability. The long life Cyro cv. with low respiration rate could be used for a shelf life of 10 days, if the taste is improved.
